In the United States, more than 10 million people have Medicare Advantage plans, and the health plans are considered the healthiest option for most Americans.
Meritains plans, which have the highest deductibles, cover more than 80 percent of the cost of basic medical care and cover preventive care.
But the coverage is not always good.
The health plan company says the coverage it offers is “unfair,” because it has been described as a “private” insurer.
A Meritaining spokeswoman said the company has been reviewing its policy.
“In general, we do not engage in any discrimination against anyone on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age, gender identity, sexual orientation, gender expression, marital status, genetic information, marital or domestic status, marital income, marital marital status status, family status, or any other characteristic protected by federal law,” the spokeswoman said.
Meritains spokeswoman Sarah D’Albagnale said Meritans policies are based on what it believes is the best cost-effectiveness and cost-saving option for the person.
“If someone is sick, they should get the care they need,” she said.
“We’re very transparent about that.”
A spokeswoman for Merit is not available for comment.
The company said its policy is based on a review of more than 1,400 reviews.
The Meritan Health Insurance Company said the reviews showed that the coverage was “fair” for some people and not fair for others.
“We have a diverse workforce, including people of all backgrounds, so the policy review process did not identify any individual or groups that were excluded based on their race, religion or gender,” the company said in a statement.
Merrill Lynch has said it is not involved in any decision to exclude people based on any demographic.
