Posted April 08, 2018 07:27:28 A new health care plan announced Wednesday aims to help Oregonians with chronic illnesses and the elderly, offering coverage for people over age 65.
Elderly Health Oregon, a state-run health insurance company, said it would cover up to $4,200 for a 65-year-old person with no health coverage.
It’s the first of its kind in the country.
“We want to do what is possible to support the elderly,” said Keith Fierer, a senior vice president with the company.
A $3,000 deductible will apply.
Oregonians can choose between a standard $500 deductible or a maximum of $1,000.
More than 100,000 Oregonians, about 15 percent of the population, have at least one chronic illness, including diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.
About 25,000 people live in Portland.
The rest live in surrounding counties, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services.
Health officials say about 5 percent of Oregonians have a chronic condition and more than half of those are elderly.
The company said the new plan is designed to cover people with certain chronic conditions who cannot afford private insurance.
The Oregon Health Plan is the state’s largest private insurance provider.
The Oregon Health Insurance Authority said the state will start offering new plans starting this month.
About 1,200 of the states 1,700 public health care facilities will offer the plan.
Oregon Health Plans is a subsidiary of Anthem, which has a large stake in the company and has a monopoly on the state-wide plan market.
Anthem has long had a strong market share, with more than 70 percent of people over 65 paying at least some of their premiums, according the state agency.
About a dozen of the companys regional offices, as well as other health plans, also are expected to offer the new plans.
Cleveland, Ohio, is also offering a $1 million plan, according a spokeswoman.
The new plans are expected have a 30 percent to 50 percent premium increase, depending on age.
Oregon Health Plans says it expects to start accepting applications for the new coverage on Tuesday.
In Portland, the state is expected to open two new health centers in the coming months.
The first is at the state Capitol.
The second is at The Mall at Broadway and Westlake.
